Good to know

  • Getting there — HNL is ~35 min from Ko Olina; rideshare, resort shuttle, or rent a car for island days.
  • Dress — resort-casual; “aloha attire” for nicer dinners. No passport needed (it’s domestic).
  • Sunscreen — Hawaii law requires reef-safe (no oxybenzone or octinoxate).
  • Time zone — Hawaii is HST, no daylight saving: ~2–3 hrs behind the West Coast, 5–6 behind the East.
  • Money — it’s the U.S.: no currency exchange, tipping as on the mainland.
  • Check-in — most flights open online 24 hrs prior; save your resort confirmation offline.

  • Getting around — Rent a car for island days; Honolulu has TheBus and Biki bike-share, and rideshare is everywhere.
  • The drink — The Mai Tai is the icon; locals love POG (passion-orange-guava) and Kona coffee, the only coffee grown commercially in the U.S.
  • Honu — Green sea turtles bask right on the sand and are federally protected — admire from ~10 ft, never touch.
  • Whale season — You’re visiting at the peak: humpbacks migrate thousands of miles to Hawaii each winter to calve.
  • State fish — The humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (reef triggerfish) has one of the longest names on Earth.
  • No snakes — Hawaii has no native snakes, and they’re banned to protect the islands.
  • The shaka — The “hang loose” hand sign was born here and means aloha, thanks, and all-good.
  • Spam capital — Hawaii eats ~7 million cans of Spam a year; try Spam musubi.
